Have you decided to work in Germany? The next crucial step is the visa application. German immigration law can seem complex, but with the right preparation, it is very manageable. Here, we explain what types of visas exist, which documents you need, and how the application process works.
Do I even need a visa?
The visa requirement depends on your nationality:
- Citizens of the EU/EEA and Switzerland: You do not need a visa to work in Germany. You can enter the country and apply for jobs directly.
- Citizens of non-EU countries (third countries): You generally must apply for a visa before entering Germany in order to be allowed to work here.
Which visa is the right one for me?
For qualified skilled professionals from non-EU countries, there are two main paths:
- The Job-Seeker Visa: If you do not have an employment contract yet, this visa allows you to enter Germany for up to six months to search for a suitable job. It is important that you can finance your living expenses and health insurance yourself during this period.
- The Visa for Gainful Employment: If you already have an employment contract or a concrete job offer from a German company, this is the right way to go. This visa allows you to start working directly in Germany. Depending on your qualifications and salary, you might be eligible for the EU Blue Card, which comes with a number of benefits.
The path to a visa: How the application process works
The visa application must always be submitted in person and before your entry into Germany. The responsible authority is the German mission abroad—that is, a German embassy or a consulate general—in your home country.
Important steps for your application:
- Schedule an appointment: Book an appointment at the German embassy in your country as early as possible. Waiting times can be long.
- Prepare your documents: Carefully gather all the required documents.
- Personal appointment: Arrive on time for your appointment and bring all original documents as well as the required copies.
Which documents do I need to submit?
The exact list can vary depending on the individual case, but these documents are generally required:
- A completely filled-out application form for a national visa.
- Your valid passport.
- A recent biometric passport photo.
- Proof of your recognized qualification (university degree or recognized vocational training) and the corresponding recognition certificate.
- If applicable, a professional license for regulated professions (e.g., doctors).
- Your employment contract or a concrete job offer (if you are applying for a visa for gainful employment).
- Proof of securing your livelihood (e.g., through a blocked account or salary statements).
- Proof of valid health insurance and your accommodation in Germany.
An important note on translations and certifications: Many documents that are not in German must be translated and certified by a recognized translator. Take care of this in advance, as it can significantly speed up the application process. You can find information about recognized translators on the website of the German mission abroad in your country.
